Assisted by experts from the public and private sectors, the 2012 Pothole Review explores the issues around potholes, including the impact of long term highways maintenance strategies, prioritising and repairing, and wider operational arrangements.

JPCS secures contract with Dudley Council

JPCS, national construction and engineering services contractor, has been awarded a highways surface treatments term contract for Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council. From April 2012, JPCS will be responsible for footway micro and slurry seal surface treatments covering areas of the Metropolitan Boroughs of Dudley and Sandwell and the City of Wolverhampton.

Planned maintenance is key to prevent costly pothole repairs

The 17th Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance survey has highlighted the importance of planned maintenance in order to prevent potholes. The report explains that overall, pothole repairs can be 20 times more expensive than planned maintenance. It also stresses that the cost of filling 1.7 million potholes across England and Wales was an estimated £90 million, with an added 10 per cent increase in resulting public complaints.

UK in urgent need for innovative solutions to prevent pothole repairs

The RAC and the AA have published the results of two new surveys highlighting the critical condition of the UK’s road network and the increased demand for pothole repairs. According to the RAC survey, three quarters of patrol drivers consider the condition of rural roads to be poor or very poor, with two thirds also highlighting the inadequate conditions of suburban roads. A staggering 89 per cent of RAC patrol drivers also believe that lack of investment in road repairs and pothole repairs is to blame for the poor road conditions.

Cheshire wins National Award for pothole repairs

Cheshire West and Chester Council have won a top national award for reported pothole repairs. The Pot Hole Response honour is from CTC – the UK National Cyclists Organisation. The Council also topped the CTC league for both the ‘speed of fixing’ and ‘quality of repairs’ category in the People’s Vote section for pothole repairs. This success results from the beginnings of an ambitious investment programme within highways to be delivered over 10 years.
